When can you contact us?
You can contact the Sexual Violence Helpline at any time. Our service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We want to be there when you need us.
Who can ask for support?
If you have been the victim of sexual violence or want to help someone who has, we at the Sexual Violence Helpline are here for you.
We are ready to listen to people of all ages (from children to seniors), whether the sexual violence they experienced happened yesterday or a long time ago. Regardless of your sexual identity, gender or cultural identity, or the form or context of the violence you experienced, we will listen and suggest accessible resources that can help you.
Our counsellors provide support not only for victims, but for their loved ones and people who work with sexual violence victims as well.
How does the Sexual Violence Helpline work?
When you contact us, a counsellor will welcome you into a safe, anonymous and confidential space where no one will judge you. We will believe you and support you while respecting your choices.
Every conversation is anchored in the here and now. We practise active listening and an empathetic approach, regardless of the form of sexual violence: assault, exploitation, harassment, cyberviolence, etc. We ask the necessary questions to identify your needs and give you the information and referrals you need, while respecting your autonomy.
Who responds to requests?
Our counsellors come from different backgrounds—victimology, criminology and social work—that enrich the team’s overall experience. They also receive specialized training in intervention with victims of sexual violence. Their work is based on protocols to ensure each comprehensive intervention is adapted to the type of violence in question, the situation of the person concerned, or their present need.
Their knowledge of the inclusive and varied resources that are available is backed by the Sexual Violence Helpline’s provincial directory, which is systematically updated. Our database contains an inventory of all specialized resources for victims of sexual violence (CALACS, designated centres for medico-social services, etc.), as well as resources that can meet their varied needs (legal clinics, shelters, etc.).
