Possible reactions to an act of sexual violence

Your reaction is entirely your own—there is no “right” way to feel. Your feelings will depend on a multitude of factors, such as the type of sexual violence you experienced, your age when it happened and your relationship with the person who was responsible for the violence. Resources are available that can help you with your own specific needs.

If you have been sexually assaulted within the past 5 days

It is recommended that the victim go as quickly as possible to a designated centre for medico-social intervention for sexual assault victims, where they will receive emergency medical and psychosocial services. Certain types of forensic samples can be collected up to 5 days after the assault. If you choose to report the assault to the police, this evidence can strengthen your case.
